 Here are monthly Common Core Standards that your student will be working on based on their grade level.  Each month these change and will be updated as changes take place.

The Colonial School District’s academic instructional system includes a set of curricula that aligns with the Delaware State Content Standards.

ELA – Reading/Language Arts

Handwriting Without Tears – Handwriting Curriculum
Handwriting Without Tears is the handwriting program used in Colonial School District. This program begins with printing in Kindergarten and continues through to cursive writing. The website provides tools and teaching strategies for parents to extend learning at home. There are lessons, videos, and activities to teach letter formation, placement, spacing, and neatness.

Words Their Way – Phonics Curriculum
Words Their Way is a developmental spelling, phonics, and vocabulary program intended to be a part of a balanced literacy plan that includes fluency, comprehension and writing.

Science

Colonial School District follows the Delaware Department of Education’srecommended science curriculum. Students K-5 complete three science kit modules per year adopted by the Delaware Science Coalition and aligned with the Delaware State Science Standards. The kit modules were created by FOSS (Full Option Science System) and the National Science Resource Center/Carolina Science Curriculum (STC).

Foss Science Kits – This website provides a place for support, resources, and fun activities for parents and students using the Foss Science Kits.

National Science Resource Center at the Smithsonian Institute – This website provides information, resources, and links for parents and students using the STC science kits.

Mathematics

Investigations is a complete mathematics program for grades K-5. Students learn arithmetic, basic facts and much more. The focus of instruction is on mathematical thinking and reasoning.

Social Studies

Harcourt Horizons – Social Studies Curriculum
This Social Studies program provides relevant content, skills lessons, and reading and vocabulary support. This website has Social Studies resources for parents and students. There are also lesson links to extension activities provided by Harcourt’s partner companies; Time For Kids, CNN/Turner Learning, Reading Rainbow, and MapQuest that add depth of understanding.
