Math 24 Club
Math 24 is a game where contestants are shown a card that has 4 numbers on it. Players can add, subtract, multiply or divide with these numbers to create an ultimate answer of 24. It was originally created to help students sharpen basic math skills such as computation, problem solving, number sense, critical thinking, and pattern sensing.
Every year, the Colonial School District sponsors a 24 Tournament. Players from each middle school compete in two divisions: 6th grade and 7th/8th grade. Competition spots are limited. The first few practices of the year are open to all students but then the best competitors are chosen to represent George Read.
This year’s competition was held on Monday, April 23 at William Penn High School. Our competitors competed against other students from Gunning Bedford and McCullough Middle Schools. The first round lasted 15 minutes and was played with single digit cards. The second round also lasted 15 minutes but was played with double digit cards. Students with the highest total points after 2 rounds went on to the third round, which is played with variables cards. George Read had 2 students make it to the final round – Amina Shahid and Cheritesh Amaravadi. Amina won first place in the 6th grade division and Cheritesh received a medal. Congratulations to all of George Read’s competitors!
