Dear Family of George Read Middle School students,

With the recent increase in severe cases of the flu virus, the following information is to help inform you of the signs and symptoms of the flu.  Understanding this information is important for the health of your student, and the health of other students and staff.

Influenza, or “the flu,” is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract (nose, throat and lungs). The flu is not just a bad cold! Flu symptoms tend to develop quickly (usually 1 to 4 days after a person is exposed to the flu virus) and are usually more severe than the typical sneezing and congestion associated with the common cold.

Flu symptoms can include:

  • Fever (Temp above 100.4 F)
  • Headache
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Dry cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are also common symptoms in children.

If your child is experiencing any of the above symptoms with fever, please keep them home until your child has been fever free for 24 hours.

Also, it’s not too late to vaccinate!

If you have any questions about this information, or about the flu vaccine, feel free to call my office or email me directly.

Thank you,

Nurse Adams
