Delaware State Senator Sarah McBride is the first transgender state senator in the country, making her the highest-ranking transgender official in the United States. Born August 9, 1990, she won in a Democratic primary September 15, 2020. She is currently the National Press Secretary of the Human Rights Campaign.
Prior to her election, McBride is credited with spearheading the advocacy effort that led to passage of legislation in Delaware banning discrimination on the basis of gender identity in employment, housing insurance, and public accommodations.
McBride interned at the White House under former President Barack Obama. Her work as an advocate for LGBTQ rights helped earn her another historic role: in 2016, at the invitation of the Clinton campaign, she became the first transgender person to speak at a national political convention. #womenshistorymonth2021 #netde #powerofwecsd
