The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed an outbreak of a food-borne illness related to a vendor product served in New Castle County Schools including Colonial from the third week of November to the first week of December. DPH reports there is no current risk and any suspected food source has been disposed of by Nutrition Services managers and staff who are all ServeSafe certified. At this point, officials say there is no reason to believe any students or staff are at risk and the number of confirmed cases in Colonial is less than a handful.
Also, please keep in mind that this is flu season. Some symptoms of the flu may also mirror
symptoms of a food-borne illness. Parents concerned about symptoms of an ill child should contact their health care provider but should not assume they are related to a food-borne illness.
Food safety is always a priority in the Colonial School District. Anyone with questions or concerns should contact the Delaware Division of Public Health at DPH Office of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at 302-744-4990 or 1-888-295-5156.
