Test to Stay Program

In addition to weekly COVID-19 surveillance testing, Quidel now offers free, daily testing for students and staff who have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 to allow them to remain in school during their quarantine period, but ONLY if they continue to test negative daily for the virus.

We were notified by the state vendor, Quidel, of a serious clinical staffing shortage that will affect the test to stay program and test to stay sites will decrease by 50%.  As of Monday, January 10th, the Wallin School will be Colonial’s only test to stay site. This is out of our control, and we appreciate your understanding and patience as we work together through this trying time.

REMINDER: The school nurse will notify the family whether a student is eligible for Test to Stay.

The purpose of Test to Stay is to allow close contacts to test so they can come to school.  Test to stay is not for symptomatic students and staff.

Weekly school-based surveillance testing will continue as normal and this temporary reduction is only for the test to stay program. The statewide test to stay locator map

will be updated on a daily basis by the Division of Public Health and Quidel for active sites which parents and staff can use. Please keep in mind that the test to stay sites are only for unvaccinated close contacts without symptoms who have been referred to the program by the school nurse.

We ask for patience and understanding while the school nurses are caring for students during the school day and are having an increase call and email volume. Kindly expect delays in response times and many answers to questions can be found in the link below.

If you have more questions about the test to stay program, please contact your school nurse.

To be eligible to participate in the “Test to Stay” Program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently registered with Quidel for weekly COVID-19 testing.  If your student is not registered, you can enroll by visiting https://my.primary.health/l/colonial-schools
  • They show no symptoms
  • They correctly  wear a  mask indoors when in school
  • Test negative daily as part of the “Test to Stay” Program
  • Continue to quarantine when not at school

NOTE: Only test results from Quidel’s Test to Stay Program will be accepted.  Results from other locations will not be accepted.

How does “Test to Stay” work for my student?

Only test results provided through the “Test to Stay” Program will be accepted to allow quarantining students to remain in school. It is the parents/caregivers responsibility to take the student daily to the designated testing sites.

If a student was exposed to someone with COVID-19 IN school . . .

  • If a student was exposed to someone with COVID-19 in school, the school nurse will contact the student’s parent/caregiver notifying them that their student has been exposed and that they have the option to remain in school during their quarantine period by receiving daily testing through the “Test to Stay” Program.
  • If the parent/caregiver consents to having their student receive daily testing through the “Test to Stay” Program, the school nurse will provide details on the location and timing of daily testing.
  • The student will need to be picked up on the day the parent is notified of the potential exposure (unless they test negative that morning through the regular COVID-19 Testing Program) but can return to class the next day if they test negative that evening in the “Test to Stay” Program and do not have any symptoms of COVID-19.

If a student was exposed to someone with COVID-19 OUTSIDE of school . . .

  • If a student was exposed to someone with COVID-19 outside of school, parents/caregivers must let the school nurse know of this exposure.
  • The student then has the option to participate in the “Test to Stay” Program to receive daily testing and remain in school during their quarantine period.
  • If the parent/caregiver consents to having their student receive daily testing through the “Test to Stay” Program, the school nurse will provide details on the location and timing of daily testing.
