FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Castle, DE- Former Flyers player Bob “The Hound” Kelly, who was a member of both of the Flyers Stanley Cup winning teams in 1974 and 1975, will join team representatives Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Gunning Bedford Middle School at 10:30 a.m.

Kelly and the team representatives will talk to students about why STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) skills matter in the game of hockey. The students have been spending several weeks working on a computer-based interactive program that among other things, teaches hockey-related issues like the loft of sticks, the surface of the ice, the face-off, and painting of the ice.  Gunning Bedford is the only school in the state of Delaware to collaborate with the Flyers on this STEM-related curricular program.

Kelly will also stress the importance of education and physical activity during his hour-long visit.

Students have been encouraged to wear their Flyers gear or the team’s colors, orange and black, which also happen to be Gunning Bedford’s school colors.

“Thanks to the Flyers, our students have learned STEM education is a part of our everyday lives, and this particular program made the learning process fun and engaging,” said Principal Dan Bartnik.

Gunning Bedford Middle School is located at 801 Cox Neck Road, New Castle, DE, 19720. Student demonstrations of the computer program will take place upon request prior to the presentation. Please advise Public Information Officer, Lauren Wilson, if you plan to attend.
