English Language Arts

The Gunning Bedford Middle School English department strives to develop the literacy development of our students so that they will become life-long readers and learners. Teachers supplement the McDougal-Littell anthology with novels, short stories, memoirs, plays, and informative pieces, to name a few.  Our students read and evaluate print, electronic and video media in order to develop the skills needed for success in the 21st century.

As teachers are preparing for the adoption of the Common Core Standards, units of study are undergoing changes.  Teachers from the three district middle schools are collaborating with the goal of aligning the Common Core Standards to the units of study at each grade level.

Our teachers continue to plan and implement lessons using the Learning Focused Solutions model of planning and instruction.  Students are demonstrating knowledge of important concepts through authentic tasks that require higher-level thinking skills.
