Dear Southern Shark Families,
It is with great excitement that I welcome you to Southern Elementary School for the 2024-2025 school year. It is going to be a fabulous year! The first day of school for students in 1st-5th grade is Monday, August 26th. Schools will be closed for all students on Friday, August 30th and Monday, September 2nd. All students return to school on Tuesday, September 3rd. Also, please note that schools are closed for students on Tuesday, September 10th, 2024 for staff professional development.

Our Kindergarten students will begin the school year in a staggered start.
Please remember to have your Kindergarten child wear the nametag included in the mailer sent home for the first week of school. |
One of our goals is to continue to improve communication between the school and our families. If any of your contact information has changed, please provide us with updated information as soon as possible. Occasional announcements will be sent to our families via the School Messenger automated phone calls, text messages, and emails. Also, if you use social media, be sure to follow our school on Facebook -@southernelementary.
Each year, to ensure that everyone has a great first day of school, we welcome our families to our Back to School Night scheduled for Thursday, August 22nd from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Though your child’s teacher may not be in attendance, you will have the opportunity to see where the classroom is located. This helps ease the back to school nervousness that some students experience and also builds positive excitement for another great year as a Southern Shark
We will split our Open House to allow as many of our families with children in different grades from having to split their time between teachers.
- September 11th
- Session 1: Open House Program – 6:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
- Session 2: Open House Program – 6:45 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.
Our school hours will remain the same this year, arrival is 8:45 a.m. and dismissal is 3:35 p.m. The building will open for students at 8:45 a.m., and children must be supervised by an adult until that time. Please remember that early dismissals and transportation changes must be made before 2:00 p.m. to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal for all of our students. If your child will have alternate transportation arrangements other than the school bus, please contact the school at (302)832-6300 before the 1st day of school (August 26th).
