A message from the principal

Dear Parent/Guardian,

A very tragic thing has happened in our school community.  On June 17, 2018 one of our students, NyKer Jones, an eighth grade student suffered a massive heart attack and died from complications on July 19, 2018.  We are all profoundly saddened by his death.

As a parent, you might want to talk to your child about the death because it impacts each person in different ways.  How children react will depend on the relationship they had with the person who died, their age, and their prior experience with death.  Your child may:

  • Appear unaffected
  • Ask questions about the death repeatedly
  • Be angry or aggressive
  • Be withdrawn or moody
  • Be sad or depressed
  • Become afraid
  • Have difficulty sleeping or eating

We suggest that you listen to your children.  If they want to talk, answer their questions simply, honestly and be prepared to answer the same questions repeatedly.  If you have any concerns about your child’s response to this loss, please contact the school for assistance.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Jones-Young family.

Sincerely,

Ige Purnell, Ed.D
Principal
