A one-of-a-kind experience for kids and adults alike, Penn Farm can provide access to educational opportunities for Colonial School District field trips, area group visits and so much more.

What will students learn?

Field trips and educational experiences will be age-appropriate and will engage students from pre-k through high school. Educational programming will align with content standards and typically will be scheduled for close to 2-hour increments. Students’ hands-on gardening experiences will be dependent on the season and may include soil preparation, planting seeds, watering, harvesting, exploring plant structure, and/or tasting vegetables.

The 2024 Fall tours are available! They will again be on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Morning Sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays, 10:00 – 11:15 am.
Afternoon Sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays, 12:00 – 1:15 pm.

Sample Schedule

  • Arrive at the farm stand run by Wheelys Farmstand and Cafe – 791 Frenchtown Rd E, New Castle, DE 19720
  • 30 minutes of hands-on educational lessons and activities via teaching garden, fruit trees, observation hive, and pollinator garden. (Age appropriate lessons)
  • Walk to William Penn High School to visit the Animal Science Program.
  • 30 minutes interacting  and learning about the animals at William Penn High School
  • Wrap-up/Depart from William Penn High School Greenhouse/Animal Area

Important Information and Policies

  • Class and Group Size
    • Field trips must be limited to no more than 35 students.
  • Scheduling
    • It is preferred to schedule field trips roughly a month in advance of your desired visit but no less than a week.
    • This is to ensure appropriate staffing availability and avoid scheduling conflicts with other tours and or events.
  • Adult Leadership/Supervision
    • It is required at all times that at least one adult per 10 students with groups of children under the age of 18.
  • Fee
    • $75 – This small fee helps pay for Healthy Food for Healthy Kids’ time.
      • Colonial School District tour groups, you are only responsible for your bussing cost as the fee will be taken care of.

    • A payment by card can be made also
