FAQ
You asked- and we answered! Please see the list of FAQs from our novice educators. Is there a question that is not on our list? Fill out our FAQ form at the bottom of this page.
Licensure and Mentoring
I have already completed the mentoring program. What other supports are offered to me as a new teacher in Colonial?
This is a great question! We have Onboarding Teams at every building who are there to welcome and support you in your transition. They will be in touch with you about upcoming events. See our mentoring page for more information!
What else do I need to do in order to be on a continuing license?
First, change your email on DEEDs https://deeds.doe.k12.de.us/ to your Colonial email. DEEDs will send any information about your license to this email. If you are on an initial license you will have to take a performance assessment within the first 4 years of teaching.
What is the performance assessment?
The state of Delaware requires all novice educators to take a performance assessment. The two approved PA are edTPA and PPAT. At the start of the year Katie, one of our PA coaches or a generated email from DEEDs will be sent to you if you need to take the assessment. Our two coaches will help you stay on top of due dates and understand rubrics and expectations!

Hiring
When will I learn about benefits, payroll and other HR questions?
Over the summer we hold HR intake meetings for our new hires. You will be contacted and asked to choose from a variety of dates to come in and learn about benefits, sign a lot of paperwork and hear about payroll. These meetings are generally 3 hours.
I’ve been hired early- now what?
Hiring early is a priority for us. If you are an early hire you are on the “bench”. Once building principals have a better sense of their needs they will start holding shorter interviews for those on the bench to determine best fit. Most of this bench hiring will happen between March and June. Make sure you attend the Bench Mixer on April 22nd to meet our building principals. RSVP here:
When is my first day of work?
New Hire Orientation begins on August 24th. Our New Hire Orientation is two full days, followed up two days of building professional development. Student start on August 31st.
Pay
How often do I get paid?
After your first paycheck, you will be paid every other Friday through direct deposit.
What is the dress code?
While we don’t have an official dress code, we would say that our teachers dress professionally or business casual.
