Ready to take the next step? We can’t wait to review your application.

The Colonial School District, where careers are committed to putting children first, is actively seeking to identify and employ a talented and diverse workforce that will support the school district in achieving its mission and vision.

Option 1: The Bench

January & February

In hockey, players sit on the bench before they are called in. So our Bench is similar.

It is a group of selected early hires waiting to have the first shot of being considered for a specific placement in a school. This means you are part of the first round of picks for the upcoming school year.

So, when you say you hire “early,” what does that mean?
Early hiring means WE can hire you as early as January before the upcoming school year. While we won’t know your exact placement until the spring, you are guaranteed a spot in the district for the upcoming school year.

Imagine knowing in January where you will be teaching in August—what a relief!

Ok—I’m hired to the Bench. Awesome. What’s next?
Bench hires are considered internal employees—and that means you are one! (PS Welcome to the Power of WE!).

As spots open, you have the opportunity to get on the radar of principals by applying to positions that interest you.

From there, principals may reach out and see if you’re a good fit.

Remind me, why is early hiring a good idea for me?
Being hired early means you receive a longer onboarding experience, which will matter to your success and happiness in your new career. Believe us—the more prep time the better.

You have opportunities to meet other early hires, connect with leadership, and meet your onboarding team (ie a group of your awesome new colleagues whose job it is to welcome & connect you)—all before you even start teaching!

This all sounds great but...I am not certified yet!
We get it! We understand that some of our candidates are still in school but that doesn’t mean you can’t be considered for the Bench. We welcome you to apply while you wait for your certification.

Ready to apply for the Bench?

Here are the steps to submit your application.

STEP 1: Submit your application.

Complete application on AppliTrack.

Application packages will be referred to hiring managers (supervisors, principals, directors, etc.) for consideration and an interview session.

For assistance and inquiries related to the AppliTrack online application system and/or application procedures, please contact a Human Resources representative at jobs@colonial.k12.de.us or 302-323-2712.

STEP 2: Be invited to complete asynchronous video interview.

You may be asked to complete a interview on Spark Hire, our video interview platform.

Keep an eye out for an email from Katie Strouss, Lead Teacher of Recruiting, or Applitrack.

STEP 3: Be invited for in-person interview & demo lesson.

If your application package and/or video interview meets the selection process criteria, you’ll receive an invitation to join us for a demo lesson in a Colonial classroom.

STEP 4: Receive & sign a contract for employment.

At this point in the process, successful candidates will receive a call from HR to accept an offer from Colonial. You are now considered an internal employee and are officially on the bench.

STEP 5: Have an opportunity to be interviewed by principals and given offer in a specific school.

Once building principals know their openings, postings will be made available to internal candidates. Bench teachers apply to the schools that most interest them. Principals will hold informal interviews and their top candidate will be recommended for their school based position.

Once again, HR will inform the top candidate that they have been recommended for the school position.

STEP 6: Be connected with your school's onboarding team.

Once you are assigned to a school, the onboarding team for your school will reach out to you.

The team is made up of several teachers who will help you get connected in CSD and make sure you have everything you need to start off your school year and throughout your first year.

Through the recruitment process, I found that Colonial was the one district that was very consistent. This helped aid in the decision making process. I personally cannot think of anything that Colonial can do differently.”
