Principal’s Corner

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

As the principal of Southern Elementary School, my mission is to improve Student Achievement and Development. This is what drives every decision that I make. My Assistant Principals, teachers, paraprofessionals, and staff members work hard every day to ensure that all of our students experience success. We use the latest technology to engage our students in their learning. We provide our students with a rigorous and relevant educational program that is focused on college and career readiness skills.

During the new school year, we will focus on three goals:

  1. Implementing a new Reading program that is aligned to theCommon Core Standards. This program uses non-fiction instructional materials to help our students improve their reading skills in all content areas. It is also designed to help our students select interesting books and articles that are on their appropriate instructional level. We want our students to experience the joys of reading for pleasure on a daily basis!
  2. Assisting students with building positive relationships with their peers. We are implementing Responsive Classroom strategies in our school this year. One of these strategies is a Morning Meeting that will take place in every classroom on a daily basis. The Morning Meeting helps students improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. It also provides students with the opportunity to practice communicating with their peers in a respectful manner, which leads to the creation of a positive learning community in every classroom.
  3. Providing a rigorous and relevant education for all students in aninclusive instructional setting. Our teachers use data to identify the instructional needs of all students (Regular Education, Special Education, English Language Learner, and Gifted and Talented). Teachers use this data to design lessons that challenge all students to reach their full potential.
