In recognition of Juneteenth, Governor Carney has ordered state offices to close on Friday June 18th.  The Colonial School District supports recognition of this important event in our history and as a result will also close on the 18th.

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it is now celebrated annually on June 19th throughout the United States. It commemorates, June 19, 1865, the anniversary of the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger, who proclaimed freedom from slavery in Texas.
