Over the next three years, the Colonial School District will be working to improve its grading and reporting system. We will begin with our elementary schools this fall. Upon receiving your child’s first marking period report card, you will notice one significant change on the report card. Rather than receiving comments, your child will be assessed on four different Approaches to Learning. This is the name that the Colonial School District has given to describe aspects of behavior, work habits, and social development. Separating these characteristics from content area grades will ensure that these grades truly reflect academic achievement.
The four Approaches to Learning that your child will be assessed on are:
- Personal Responsibility
- Work Ethic
- Civic Responsibility
A rubric will be used by all elementary teachers in the district to assess each of the four areas on a 3- point scale. The full rubric has been provided on the reverse side of this letter.
After reviewing the rubric, if you have any questions, please contact your school principal.
We wish you and your child a successful school year!
